PRINCIPLES OF DENTISTRY, ORAL MEDICINE AND ORAL PATHOLOGY. PRINCIPLES OF EPIDEMIOLOGY AND CONSERVATIVE DENTISTRY. Students who do not attend or non-attendant worker students are not expected, therefore it is not possible to study and reach the objectives independently.
Traditional frontal lectures in class room, with power
point projections. Discussion among students on
Embryology and craniofacial growth.
Development and morphology of the teeth and jaws.
Tooth eruption and its anomaly.
Psychological approach to the dental patient in childhood
Nutrition and oral health
Examination of the mouth and related structures: Clinical History and physical examination
Imaging techniques - x-ray examinations
Dental caries prevention and conservative treatment of primary and permanent teeth
Gingivitis, parodontitis. Oral hygiene techniques.
Dental trauma and fractures.
Oral tumors in children
Stomatitis and oral infections in children
Temporomandibular disorders in children and pre-adult patients
Chronic diseases of the mouth
Teaching objectives are that students know the typical
diseases of the oral cavity of the children and their
preventive measures. In particular, students will need to
know how to properly approach young patients, to know
embryology, the correct growth of the stomatognathic
system and its abnormalities (in particular dental
anomalies and malocclusion). Furthemore they have to
know the etiopathogenesis of dental caries and its most
common complications, to know how to treat them from
a therapeutic point of view; to know the most common
oral mucosa and bone diseases and spoiled habits. Dental
traumatisms of deciduous and permanent teeth and how
to treat them is also an important topic to learn.
Knowledge and understanding
The course wants to provide the knowledge needed to
understand the main aspects of the most common oral
cavity pathologies in pediatric age and to favour a
diagnostic judgment. Specific attention will be given to
preventive aspects of caries disease, early diagnosis and
therapy of the same, and its complications, as well as
occlusion and TMJ pathologies, spoiled habits, and dental
Ability to apply knowledge and understanding
The course, also through the physical examination and
the evaluation of the anamnestic data, is intended to
favour the most appropriate "holistic" diagnosis of the
oral conditions, in order to implement measures as
targeted therapies or prevention.
After the frontal lectures and through the subsequent
individual study of the etiopathogenetic processes of the
major pathologies of the oral cavity in pediatric age, the
students will be able to improve their autonomous
judgment, formulation and proposal of “ad hoc”
The acquisition of theoretical and practical knowledge in
the field of paediatric oral diseases, especially in the case
of caries disease, malocclusion and trauma, and possible
diseases of the oral mucosa and bone, will enable the
acquisition of a correct language and appropriate
specialized terminology, especially useful in the
relationship with the relatives of young patients and with
colleagues from other specialist branches.
Learning skills will be stimulated during frontal lectures
through powerpoint presentations and classroom discussion, with the aim of verifying the actual
understanding of the topics discussed. Learning skills will
also be stimulated by the invitation to deepen some
topics also with supplementary teaching materials
(official documents, magazine articles, and newspapers)
to develop application skills.
